This bleak, minimalistic exploration of violence and human nature from French auteur Bruno Dumont won the Grand Jury Prize at Cannes. It tells the tragic story of two soldiers who sleep with the same woman and then go off to a nameless war where they perform and witness atrocities, while the girl slowly goes insane back home.

Les Flandres. Demester partage sa vie entre sa ferme et les ballades avec Barbe, son amie d`enfance. Il l`aime secrètement et douloureusement, acceptant d`elle le peu qu`elle lui donne. Avec d`autres jeunes, Demester part comme soldat à la guerre dans un pays lointain. La barbarie, la camaraderie et la peur, transforment Demester en guerrier. Au fil des saisons, seule, Barbe attend le retour des soldats et dépérit. L`amour immense qu`éprouve Demester pour Barbe le sauvera-t-il ?
