Five hundred years before the arrival of Christopher Columbus, the Vikings landed on the rugged North American shores of present-day Canada and began building their settlement.
The discovery of their early inhabitance was made in 1961 by Norwegian explorer Helge Ingsad and his wife Anne Stine, who found remnants of a second-century Viking settlement on the island of Newfoundland - the only authenticated Viking settlement on the entire continent. Their discovery suggests that the Vikings` plans for conquest had been more far-reaching than experts had originally thought. Yet evidence also suggests that the Norsemen`s stay on Newfoundland was so brief that if it wasn`t for Ingstad and Stine`s discovery, the settlement may have escaped history completely.
What happened to these Viking explorers after their arrival in North America, and why did they leave? Ancient Mysteries embarks on a journey to find answers to these and many more questions about the Vikings In North America.
