Elaine (Hanna Schygulla) fristet ihren Alltag in einem grauen finsteren Viertel von New York. Ihr Freund Robert, ein Anwalt, hat sie verlassen, weil er verheiratet ist. Elaine schreibt Geschichten, die aber nie verlegt werden, da nach ihrem Literatur Agenten zu wenig homosexuelle KGB Agenten und nymphomanische Frauen vorkämen. Eines Tages dreht Elaine auf der Straße halb durch und fuchtelt wild mit ihrer Damenpistole herum. Ein Gaunerpärchen versteht diese Geste falsch und opfert bereitwillig Geld, Schmuck und Brieftasche. Durch dieses Ereignis lernt sie Lulu (Debbie Harry) kennen. Aber vorerst nur auf einem Zettel, der sich bei den Sachen der Gauner befindet. Von nun an wird Elaine von zwei rivalisieren Gangsterbanden gejagt um ihr das Geheimnis der Lulu abzujagen.
