Als Antonia mit ihrer Tochter nach zwanzig Jahren in ihr Heimatdorf zurückkehrt, hat sich nicht viel geändert. Einige Freunde sind verstorben, andere gibt es immer noch, wie die Russin Olga und den Bauern Bas.

Antonia übernimmt den Hof ihrer Grosseltern, sät, erneut und lebt getreu ihrer Devise "leben und leben lassen". Eine Einstellung, die unter der Dorfbevölkerung hingenommen wird, wie man eine schlechte Ernte hinnimmt. Ihre Tochter Danielle wächst heran, studiert Malerei und wünscht sich ein Kind - allerdings ohne einen Mann. Für Antonia kein Problem. Kurzerhand geht es in die Stadt, um einen geeigneten Erzeuger zu finden. Eine Entscheidung, die besonders bei dem Pfarrer auf wenig Verständnis stösst...

In the aftermath of WWII, strong-willed Antonia returns to her small hometown where she has inherited her mother's farm. Antonia, joined by her free-spirited artist daughter Danielle, ingratiate themselves with the town's tight-knit and eccentric community. As the years unfold, love and tragedy come to Antonia and Danielle and the pair foster a vibrant circle of strong, liberated women.
