Romance & Cigarettes is the story of a marriage on the brink of collapse. A mid-life crisis has given Nick, a Queens, NY ironworker a roving eye much to the bewilderment of his wife Kitty. The object of Nick's affection is Tula, a romantic in the truest sense of the word. Paying homage to classic Hollywood musicals, borrowing from The Singing Detective and Pennies From Heaven, a jukebox musical where heartfelt feelings are verbalized not through spoken word but through song and dance. From Dusty Springfield ("Piece of My Heart") and Elvis Presley ("Trouble") to Cyndi Lauper ("Prisoner of Love"), the musical numbers are as eclectic as the characters mouthing them.

From writer/director John Turturro and the Coen Brothers comes an offbeat, down and dirty musical. With blistering dialogue, whimsical set-pieces, and an all-star award-winning cast, Romance & Cigarettes is like nothing you`ve seen before! When Kitty (Susan Sarandon) discovers Nick (James Gandolfini) is having an affair with the sultry seductress Tula (Kate Winslet), their rocky relationship gets a whole lot rockier. Nick finds himself facing a full-scale revolt from his daughters (Mary-Louise Parker, Mandy Moore and Aida Turturro) at home, and Kitty enlists her oddball cousin Bo (Christopher Walken) to track down Tula. As bawdy as it is comical, this battered fairy tale deals with love and hate, life and death, and romance and cigarettes, all set to the eclectic classics of Bruce Springsteen, James Brown, Dusty Springfield and many more.

    Film inclassable, ovni, il ne m'a guère convaincue mais réserve tout de même quelques plaisirs : Kate Winslet dans un numéro de danse incendiaire avec des pompiers et quelques scènes avec le regretté J.Gandolfini. Mais la grande Susan Sarandon est regrettablement oubliée dans le scénario et l'ensemble laisse une impression de brouillon - Turturro a sans doute trop voulu faire original.

    Dieser Film ist ein wunderbares Broadway hommage. Er vereint alle klasischen Musical Elemente, mit moderner Story und modernen Liedern. Ausgezeichnete Schauspieler tragen die wunderbar witzige Story. Auch die Liedertexte sind frech und die Dialoge gewagt. Die Bilder leben von grellen Farben, und Kamerabilder die zwischen ruhig und hektisch tendieren. Nur als ernstzunehmendes Beziehungsdrama taugt der Film nicht, aber das will er auch nicht. Klasse Musical!

    ehrlich gesagt hatte ich nach all den presseartikeln mehr erwartet. Das Ganze war viel zu wenig autentisch.
