Agosto 1980. Dopo il primo pellegrinaggio di Giovanni Paolo II in Polonia, i lavoratori cominciano gli scioperi contro il regime comunista. Nel paese viene proclamata la legge marziale. Varsavia è occupata dai carri armati e gli scioperi vengono brutalmente repressi. A celebrare la messa e ad aiutare gli operai arriva un giovane sacerdote, Jerzy Popieluszko.
