West Cornwall in 1895: a once-glorious tin mine - on which the whole town has depended for generations - is now in its final death throes. A weather-beaten opera company arrives to give a performance in the town hall and soon finds itself tangled up in a scam to offload the mine`s worthless shares. But when the mine unexpectedly yields up new treasures, the worst aspects of human nature spill over into everyday life.
