Controversial director Andrzej Zulawski is Poland’s wildest artist-outlaw; and his cranked-up genre films are as notorious as they are remarkable. ON THE SILVER GLOBE; a science fiction epic that was banned by authorities before completed; remains his best-known and least-seen work. In this disturbing glimpse into the future; a group of space pioneers crash-land on the Moon; where they begin a colony. All of the adults die off save one; who becomes known as the Old Man. The children revert to a primitive lifestyle; creating their own myths; deities; and social classes. Years later; a space bureaucrat from Earth arrives on the scene and is hailed as their great messiah. Zulawski began his film in the mid-1970s but the production was halted by authorities. The wily director rescued his negative from destruction and escaped to France; where he became known for his artistic but violent films. In the last days of Communism; Zulawski returned to Poland and finished ON THE SILVER GLOBE. Though never completed to Zulawski’s original vision; this sci-fi epic is as fascinating as it is unsettling.
