In early-'30s Germany, dedicated if self-involved stage actor Hendrik Höfgen (Klaus Maria Brandauer) built repute and respect for his performance of Mephistopheles in "Faust." However, as the years found his homeland in the ever-tightening grip of Nazism, his compromise and collaboration in order to hold center stage left him the one selling his soul.
