Il dottor Henry Jekyll (John Barrymore) divide il suo tempo a Londra tra poveri bisognosi di cure e la ricerca scientifica. Toccato dalle insinuazioni di Sir George Carew, padre della sua futura sposa Millicent, circa la vera natura della rettitudine umana, Jekyll decide di sperimentare in laboratorio una serie di droghe capaci di separare il bene dal male nella personalità di ciascun individuo. Ottenuta una particolare composizione chimica, la sperimenta su di sé, trasformandosi così in un uomo dominato dalla malvagità.
