The lyrical, profoundly moving Still Walking is the most personal work to date from contemporary Japanese master Hirokazu Kore -eda (Maborosi, After Life, Nobody Knows). Fashioned as a tribute to his parents, the film depicts one day in the life of the Yokoyamas, gathered together for a celebratory ritual that only gradually makes itself clear. Rather than focus on big dramatic moments, Kore-eda relies on simple gestures and domestic routines (especially cooking) to evoke a family's entire life, its deep regrets and its daily joys. Featuring vivid, heartrending performances and a gentle naturalism that harks back to the director's earlier, documentary work, Still Walking is an extraordinary portrayal of the ties that bind us.

Ein einladendes Haus an der japanischen Küste. Hier leben der pensionierte Arzt Shohei Yokoyama und seine Frau Toshiko. Die Familie trifft sich wie jedes Jahr, um dem Tod Junpeis, des erstgeborenen Sohnes und Bruders zu gedenken. Der zweite Sohn, Ryoto, ist immer im Schatten des Älteren gestanden und fühlt sich von seinem Vater unverstanden. So will er bei dem Treffen auch nicht gestehen, dass er gerade arbeitslos ist. Erschwerend kommt hinzu, dass er eine Witwe mit einem zehnjährigen Sohn geheiratet hat.

    Wie er nur noch aus Asien kommen kann. 1 3/4 Stunden lang wird ein Familientreffen erzählt, alles in ruhigen Standbildern. Im ganzen Film wird die Kamera nur drei Mal leicht geschwenkt. Sicher nichts für jemanden, der einen Action-Film sucht, bei dem es einem schwindlig wird. Sehenswert für jeden, der sich für andere Kulturen interessiert.

    film magnifique avec de très beaux paysages paisibles à l'oeil & à l'esprit. ce qui atténue les tourments intérieurs de chaque personnage, comme le train rouge qui passe au loin, à l'image du temps, inexorable. au fur et à mesure que l'histoire se développe on perçoit que cette famille présente bon nombre de caractéristiques similaires à la nôtre, à celle de tout un chacun. et c'est sans doute là que réside la force de ce film. plein de poésie et de symboles qui invitent à une réflexion pour la vie.
