Producer irwin winkler (rocky, raging bull), in his screewriting/directing debut, recreates hollywood's "blacklist era". de niro plays merril, a director pressured to testify aganist friends who are suspected communists. and bening is merrill's ex-wife, sharing the whirlpool of scandal drawing them together.
